Siblings die from COVID-19 one week apart after attending uncle’s funeral

Adelita Cruz Trevino and Nicolas Trevino were not only siblings - they were best friends.

The 39-year-old sister and 35-year-old brother died from COVID-19 complications just a week apart.

Daniel Trevino, their brother, told CNN that they both tested positive for coronavirus on November 6 after a trip to California to attend their uncle’s funeral.

Adelita passed away from the virus on November 29 at Ascension Borgess Hospital. A week later, her brother died at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. Jesusa Vela, their sister, said that her brother died hours after his sister’s funeral.

“I don’t wish this on anybody,” Trevino said. “My sister was 39 and my brother was 35. Pretty young. They had a lot of life left in them. And unfortunately, their lives were cut short because of the virus.”

Before testing positive, Adelita showed all the symptoms of coronavirus, from body aches to fevers. Vela said that her sister was admitted to the hospital on the same day she received a positive COVID-19 test.

Suddenly, the next day, her brother was admitted and was sent home to quarantine. He returned to the hospital a week later, where his condition worsened.

The brother and sister were neighbors in Hartford, Michigan. Both Nicolas and Adelita raised children as single parents, with 11 kids in total between the two.

“They were always at each other’s houses,” Vela said. “They liked to barbecue a lot. Lita was always over there. They barbecued almost every weekend. They did a lot of stuff together.”

A GoFundMe account has been put together to raise money for funeral funds and for the children who are grieving the loss of their parents.

“The mask is temporary,” Trevino said. “When you lose someone, they are not coming back.”
