As many people in the U.S. gear up to start another school year, students and families may try to get in one last bit of summer fun at a traveling carnival or theme park.
The rides they find there may be fun, but are they safe?
Crews rescued seven people from a ride that got stuck at a carnival outside St. Louis, Missouri, earlier this summer. Despite an inspection by county officials before the fair opened, the attraction malfunctioned, according to organizers.
This week on the Something Offbeat podcast, we share our own ride experiences and check in with amusement ride safety consultant Ken Martin.
He explains that there’s plenty that can wrong between the time of an inspection and when it’s time for the ride to run, especially when the human element is introduced to the situation. However, there is some more encouraging news.
“You know... a lot of people think they’re invincible," Martin told Something Offbeat host Mike Rogers, "but the rules and regulations are there for a reason. And if you follow them, you’re going to be fine."
Listen in for tips on how to stay safe during your next ride.
