NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — After getting her COVID-19 vaccine, one woman’s doctor wrote her a prescription for the best medicine in these bleak times: a hug.
Jessica Shaw took to Twitter to post a photo of her mother’s prescription slip, which was given to her after getting her second vaccine, telling her to go hug her family.
“You are allowed to hug your granddaughter,” the doctor wrote on the slip.
In a follow-up tweet, video shows Shaw’s mother, Evelyn, sharing an emotional hug with her granddaughter.
“First hug she’s had in a year,” the caption read. “Thank you to all the scientists and doctors who made this happen!”
Shaw’s sister, Dr. Laura Shaw Frank, weighed in on Twitter calling the prescription slip “holistic medical care.”
“Our mom's doctor (also mine and my daughter's doctor) knows that our mom is very nervous to return to the world,” the doctor wrote. “She figured out how to ease her path. Medical care from the heart.”
The video quickly generated over 60,000 views just hours after it was posted, with hundreds of users saying the hug moved them to tears as well.
“Shedding happy tears watching this. I hope to see more and more uplifting moments like this one,” one user wrote in response to the hug.
“Such a simple act has so much meaning. Kudos to the doctor who took the time and understanding to know how much she needed this,” said another user.
In New York State, nearly 6 million COVID-19 vaccines have been distributed and nearly 20% of all New Yorkers have been given at least one vaccine dose.
Recently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines for those who have been fully vaccinated against the virus.
