The Best Restaurants in Wrigleyville

On game days, the streets of Wrigleyville freeze into a parking lot, the bars overflow with beer, the entire neighborhood pulses with excitement. But the crowds, the surging mood, and yes even the traffic are all part of the fun. They also make an excellent excuse to grab a bite nearby to wait it out. Whether you’re looking for something low-key off the main drag or somewhere to pile in with your fellow Cubs fans, there are a ton of dining options, especially as the North Side’s continual evolution brings more big names and culinary attention to the area. Here are the spots to check out before or after a game.

Dutch & Doc’s

Just across from Wrigley in a gleaming development, Dutch & Doc’s comes from the imperial Boka restaurant group. The restaurant serves upscale American food, so expect a broad menu of classic sandwiches, crowd-pleasing mains and lots of meat, all with a nice view of the stadium. Go for steak or pasta, get a round of draft cocktails or a pitcher, and fill up on the simple joys of life.

Tac Quick

Don’t be fooled by the menu you initially receive at this Thai favorite. The servers assume anyone walking in simply wants Americanized pad thai and a Coke. But ask for the “secret” (not so secret) menu of Thai specialties and you’ll discover dishes worth traveling for. Isaan style sour pork sausages, spicy raw shrimp and boat noodles are all on offer.

Aurelio’s Pizza

Do the Cubs proud and devour a pie from a traditional Chicago pizza shop before (and after) a game. The South Side chain Aurelio’s has been serving crispy thin-crust tavern-cut (cut into little squares) pizza since 1959, but the Wrigleyville location is new as of 2018. Bring friends, order a few “siesta” size pies, and drink until it’s time to battle the crowds into the stadium.

The Roost

Fried chicken, biscuits and tickets to a Cubs game are a pretty dangerous trifecta. Get the first two at The Roost, a mini-chain serving some of Chicago’s best fried chicken in sandwiches, tenders and wings. Sandwiches come loaded between halved biscuits in copious combos, like the Sunrise with bacon, cheddar and a fried egg.

Chicago Diner

Vegans and vegetarians may not be able to partake in the traditional dog and a beer at the game, but they can indulge in the classic pre or post-game feast at Chicago Diner, a decades-old institution serving up gluttonous meat-free diner fare. Even the omnivores that vegans drag along will happily tuck in to a bowl of stroganoff poutine, a pierogi quesadilla, or a portobello truffle melt. Be sure to top it off with a vegan milkshake for good measure.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream

If you’ve made the responsible decision not to hit another bar after enjoying several ballpark beers, head to Jeni’s for a post-game treat. The ice cream chain imported from Ohio scoops peppy flavor combos like brandied banana brûlée, cold brew with coconut cream, and churro, all in a bright, lively space.
