First-round draft pick, All-Star Game MVP, World Series champion—Alex Bregman has already accomplished plenty in his MLB career. But his resume, at least on statistics site Baseball-Reference.com, is still growing. An eagle-eyed fan noticed earlier this week that a new, non-baseball-related accomplishment had been added to Bregman’s profile page.
As recently alluded to on Sunday Night Baseball, Bregman won Mike Trout’s fantasy football league last year, capturing the title over fellow big-leaguers Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer, Joc Pederson and, most notably, Tommy Pham, who quit the league in a huff after accusing Pederson of manipulating the waiver wire by illegally stashing players on injured reserve. Pham waited months to exact his revenge, confronting and later slapping Pederson in a bizarre incident that would lead to a three-game suspension. Trout has since stepped down with Steven Chea of Barstool Sports replacing him as league commissioner.
What was once an amusing anecdote has taken on a life of its own with Trout’s infamous league quickly becoming a pop-culture phenomenon, inspiring t-shirts and catchphrases galore. Bregman, who will undoubtedly be asked about his team when the Astros appear on Sunday Night Baseball this weekend (the reigning AL champs host the White Sox at Minute Maid Park), credited his fantasy success to Colts workhorse Jonathan Taylor and Bengals rookie Ja’Marr Chase. Bregman drafted the latter because Chase, like himself, played collegiately at LSU.
