After a rather shocking NLDS exit, the Los Angeles Dodgers might be plotting a run at expected American League MVP Aaron Judge.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that "the Dodgers could become serious players in this offseason's Judge sweepstakes."
If the Dodgers were to sign Judge, he would join a lineup that includes Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith and Max Muncy.
There would be sacrifices that the Dodgers would have to make to sign Judge, beyond investing hundreds of millions of dollars in a player entering his age-31 season that has a non-insignificant injury history.
First of all, if they sign Judge, retaining star shortstop Trea Turner, also set to become a free agent, likely would be off the table.
Secondly, if Judge were to stay in right field, that would mean Mookie Betts would have to play another position. Either shifting to center on a full-time basis seems unlikely given that they are both now in their early 30s. But Betts -- a five-time Gold Glove Award winner in right field -- is apparently willing to play at second base, his natural position.
The Yankees, of course, will have something to say about Judge's future, given that he led baseball in home runs (62), RBIs (RBIs), on-base percentage (.425), slugging percentage (.686), OPS (1.111) and WAR (11.5) this season.
The San Francisco Giants have also been speculated on as a landing spot for Judge, who is from Linden, California and grew up rooting for the team.
But the idea of Judge joining a Dodgers team that won 111 games during the regular season is tantalizing, that's for sure.
