NFC Championship delayed several minutes as officials try to determine if punt hit skycam wire

Jets fans, and maybe Rays fans, almost got a familiar moment late in the first quarter of the NFC Championship Game in Philly: play was delayed for a few minutes while replay officials tried to discern whether a Brett Kern punt hit one of the guidewires of the sky cam.

It was a very short punt for Kern – which, as Eagles fans unfortunately know, isn’t exactly a rare phenomenon – and several Birds on the sidelines pointed up at the wires after seeing the ball change it’s rotational direction mid-flight.

Unfortunately, FOX’s replays, which were a little lackluster in the first quarter, didn’t have a good angle, and the officiating crews in Philly and New York discerned they couldn’t confirm if the punt hit the wire or not. So, thanks to the “shank” and a Zech McPherson penalty, San Francisco took over at midfield.
