ESPN appears to be narrowing down its choices to host its NBA Finals coverage next season.
According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Mike Greenberg is among the candidates ESPN is considering, as well as Elle Duncan, Cassidy Hubbarth and more.
Greenberg, a longtime face of the network and host of “Get Up,” is a notable candidate because he would be replacing Maria Taylor — who left the network this summer in the wake of a PR nightmare in which colleague Rachel Nichols was caught on tape suggesting Taylor was given hosting duties because she is Black and the network wanted to improve its diversity.
Obviously, Greenberg is a white male so it would certainly raise a few eyebrows if he were to get the gig considering the circumstances around why it is available.
Stephen A. Smith reportedly expressed interest in hosting the network’s NBA Finals coverage, but the NBA does not view his opinionated and bombastic style as the right fit for its marquee event, Marchand reported this summer.
ESPN announced on Monday that it would debut a new NBA studio show, “NBA Today,” hosted by Malika Andrews.
Andrews, 26, worked as a sideline reporter during ESPN’s NBA Finals coverage last year and essentially replaces Nichols, who has been removed entirely from NBA coverage.
