Trey Lance may not necessarily be the Week 1 starter for the San Francisco 49ers this season, but there is plenty of hype surrounding the first-round draft pick.
Lance impressed over the course of the preseason and many are excited to see what the dual-threat quarterback could bring to the table.
Among those is former NFL quarterback Jake Plummer.
Plummer, who joined Zach Brook on the “Upon Further Review” podcast, said he has not seen enough film on Lance, but likened the quarterback to a former star based on his abilities.
“I haven’t seen enough film on him to tell you who he reminds you of, but I know just with his abilities with his legs and his arms maybe he’ll be a little like a Randall Cunningham-type,” he said. “Ability to extend plays, scramble — but that brings in the risk of injury. Hopefully he’s smart on how to get down, dodge guys and not be big, be small and not take those hard shots.”

Lance has a similar build as Cunningham — both are listed at six feet, four inches — and certainly a similar skill set.
Cunningham was perhaps ahead of his time, emerging as one of the first true dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles in the mid-to-late 1980s and later with the Minnesota Vikings. He was a four-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro in 1998.
With Lance in Kyle Shanahan’s West Coast offense, the sky is certainly the limit as 49ers fans hope Lance can truly be something special.
