Sports NBA draft: Final 2021 mock with all 30 first-round picks

NBA draft: Final 2021 mock with all 30 first-round picks

75756A5E-120A-4932-810C-2FD980DB785E
By Dan Mennella, Audacy Sports

The 2021 NBA Draft is only hours away, and if the big night is anything like the preceding days and weeks, we could see trade action shaking up the picture.

At least two lottery picks were swapped in recent weeks and months -- with more rumored to come -- while a handful of selections have been moved in the back half of the first round.

Meanwhile this year's class is deeper than last year's, which was said to be relatively thin after a blue-chip top three of Anthony Edwards, James Wiseman and LaMelo Ball.

One factor perhaps accounting for the relative surplus of talent this time around is the presence of a new kind of prospect -- the G-League alum. This year, several players are graduating from a pilot program which allowed them to work on their game against fellow professionals in the NBA's quasi-minor leagues, an initiative designed for players who might otherwise have detoured abroad.

More on those players and others, in our final mock before the 2021 NBA Draft.

Picks 1-5

1. Detroit Pistons - Cade Cunningham, G, Oklahoma State
2. Houston Rockets - Jalen Green, G, G League
3. Cleveland Cavaliers - Evan Mobley, C, USC
4. Toronto Raptors - Jalen Suggs, G, Gonzaga
5. Orlando Magic - Scottie Barnes, F, Florida State

This is an extremely chalky top-5, but it also makes plenty of sense for all teams involved. Some reports have indicated the Pistons aren't fully sold on either the No. 1 pick itself or perhaps specifically Cunningham, but until or unless they unload the pick, we're assuming they'll go with Cade.

The Rockets are reportedly interested in trading up for the Pistons' pick, presumably to nab Cunningham. But short of that, they'd do well with Green, whom they are also said to covet. Green starred in the aforementioned G League program after he was one of the top high school recruits in 2020, sealing his place in this year's lottery.

Meanwhile the Cavs are reportedly getting calls from teams interested in the third overall pick, perhaps from those interested in Mobley. Scouts and draft hounds rave about his shot blocking, athleticism, defensive versatility, and the promise of his soft touch despite an overall raw offensive game.

Picks 6-10

6. Oklahoma City Thunder - James Bouknight, G, UConn
7. Golden State Warriors - Moses Moody, G, Arkansas
8. Orlando Magic - Davion Mitchell, G, Baylor
9. Sacramento Kings - Jonathan Kuminga, F, G League
10. Memphis Grizzlies - Josh Giddey, G, Adelaide (National Basketball League)

Bouknight has surged up big boards and mock drafts in recent weeks, pacing safely within the lottery in most editions, after he was pegged in the mid- or late-teens months prior. In any event, the Thunder are interested in the UConn product -- as are the Warriors. We've awarded this classic "helium" prospect to the Thunder in this scenario, with the Warriors opting for another intriguing scoring threat, Moody, with the next pick.

However, it wouldn't be especially surprising if the Warriors were to move off the seventh pick -- potentially packaging it with their other lottery selection, at No. 14 -- according to recent reports. Those picks could potentially buy Golden State a better position in the lottery, or as some reports indicate, could be used to acquire a more established veteran who could slot into the starting lineup alongside the team's veteran core.

Picks 11-15

11. Charlotte Hornets - Franz Wagner, F, Mighican
12. San Antonio Spurs - Korey Kispert, G/F, Gonzaga
13. Indiana Pacers - Chris Duarte, G, Oregon
14. Golden State Warriors - Jared Butler, G, Baylor
15. Washington Wizards - Trey Murphy III, G, Virginia

Duarte, the oldest prospect in the draft at 24, has also seen his stock rise some in recent weeks, with various reports linking him to the Knicks, Lakers, and others in the back half of the draft. His game and overall profile remind me a bit of Tyrese Haliburton from last year, with better size and defense but without the facilitating skills on offense. In any event, it wouldn't surprise us to see him sneak into the early teens, as a player who is relatively seasoned and NBA-ready.

Butler is a nice-looking combo guard who improved each of his three seasons at Baylor, culminating in a Final Four MVP Award, and is still relatively young at 20. Like his teammate, Davion Mitchell, it will be interesting to see where he goes. Reading the scouting reports, there's a sense that a heart condition is holding Butler back a bit on some big boards. But his offensive game is polished and and dynamic -- just what the Warriors are said to be seeking.

Murphy, too, has shot up big boards during the pre-draft process. In a league where sharpshooting is increasingly coveted, Murphy's 40% career mark from deep at Virginia has apparently turned heads. He'd be a local-ish pick for the Wizards, so there's also that.

Picks 16-20

16. Oklahoma City - Jalen Johnson, F, Duke
17. New Orleans Pelicans - Keon Johnson, G, Tennessee
18. Oklahoma City - Alperen Sengun, C, Turkey
19. New York Knicks - Usman Garuba, F, Real Madrid (Euro League)
20. Atlanta Hawks - Ziaire Williams, F, Stanford

Jalen Johnson is one of the big question marks of this draft, after playing well in 13 games for Duke before calling off his season. He's an athletic dynamo at 6-9, 220 pounds with real ball-handling skills and the ability to get to the basket but a questionable shot -- his profile has drawn comparisons to that of Ben Simmons for this reason. Don't be surprised if he's gone before 16.

The Pelicans would do well here to get Keon Johnson, who some project as a top-10 pick, even if he's not an ideal fit on the current roster. The Tennessee product's freakish athleticism stands out no matter who he's playing against. His offensive game is raw, but he held his own in his lone year in college playing above the rim and flashed the ability to make circus finishes at the basket.

Garuba is said to be a defensive terror with little offensive game to speak of. He was named Rising Star of the Euro League last season, at age 19, and looks to be the ultimate "glue guy" in this class. Sounds like a Tom Thibodeau special.

Williams' stock has seemingly dipped after a down lone year at Stanford, but the Hawks can afford to role the dice on upside. The 3-and-D wing player seems to settle too often for jumpers, but his strong handle and facilitating skills suggest better days lay ahead if he can improve his shot selection and overall decision-making.

Picks 21-25

21. New York Knicks - Jaden Springer, G, Tennessee
22. Los Angeles Lakers - Ayo Dosunmu, G, Illinois
23. Houston Rockets - Kai Jones, PF/C, Texas
24. Houston Rockets - Sharife Cooper, G, Auburn
25. Los Angeles Clippers - Tre Mann, G, Florida

Springer's lone season in Tennessee was a bit uneven, but overall it was positive, especially given he's still only 18. His game and his physique are both mature beyond his years, though, and he posted strong shooting percentages across the board, to go along with solid, committed defense. He's a different player from last year's draft steal Immanuel Quickley, but there's a somewhat similar blueprint here from the Knicks' perspective.

The Rockets keep it in-state by taking Jones, an intriguing prospect who is still developing after he was late getting into basketball. Jones' athleticism jumps out at you and rivals that of Mobley, and he even flashes the ability push the ball up the floor in transition. He is raw, though, so he may only end up a role player. With the following pick, the Rockets go with Cooper, an undersized facilitator who averaged 8 dimes per game as a freshman with Auburn. He needs to clean up his shooting from the floor big time, but his 83% success rate at the free-throw line (on nearly 9 attempts per game) suggests there's a nice stroke in there somewhere.

Picks 26-30

26. Denver Nuggets - Miles McBride, G, West Virginia
27. Brooklyn Nets - Isaiah Jackson, PF/C, Kentucky
28. Philadelphia 76ers - Cameron Thomas, G, LSU
29. Phoenix Suns - Day'Ron Sharpe, C, North Carolina
30. Utah Jazz - Quentin Grimes, G, Houston

The Nets would do well to get Jackson here, who is pegged to go a few slots higher in most mocks. Rim protection is the name of his game, and that appears to be something Brooklyn sorely needs. The Sixers, meanwhile, look to add a little offensive punch with their selection of Thomas, in their second draft with Jed Morey. The LSU product can be a little erratic from the field at times, but he feasts at the free-throw line, a threat the Sixers' offense could stand to benefit from.
