49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced after their win over the Miami Dolphins that Jimmy Garoppolo is done for the season.

Garoppolo got hurt during the 49ers’ first drive Sunday afternoon. He was carted from the bench to the locker room after getting sacked, and further evaluation revealed he has a broken foot that will require surgery.

Brock Purdy took over for Garoppolo on Sunday, and he handled himself well. A 22-year-old rookie out of Iowa State, Purdy had yet to see substantial regular season game action, something that changed Sunday . He went 25-of-37 in the air for 210 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The 49ers have Jacob Eason on the practice squad, and he represents the only other in-house option at quarterback.

All of this comes after an eventful offseason for the 49ers, who appeared certain to move on from Garoppolo so they could give the keys to the offense to Trey Lance. They never found a taker for Garoppolo, electing to keep him as a backup. He quickly became the starter once again, with Lance sustaining a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2.

Garoppolo responded by helping get the 49ers into playoff positioning. Now, Purdy will be the one leading the offense down the stretch.
