Close your eyes and picture this: It's Week 8 in the NFL season. The Washington Redskins are in first place in the NFC East. The New York Giants are 1-6 and an absolute trainwreck. OK, now open your eyes. That wild dream you just had is actually a reality. The Redskins beat the Cowboys last week to hold on to the NFC East lead at 4-2. The Giants lost to the Falcons to fall to 1-6 in what has been a worse season than anyone could have imagined. Will the Giants win another game?

Not many people were sure what to make of the Redskins coming into the season. They came in with a new franchise QB in Alex Smith, who signed a big deal in the offseason. They lost rookie RB Derrius Guice during training camp to a torn ACL. They signed 33-year-old Adrian Peterson, who ended up being the starter. Despite the turnover, the Redskins are off to a 4-2 start and atop the shaky NFC East. Peterson ran the ball well again last week in a tight 20-17 win over the rival Cowboys, and Jordan Reed has stayed healthy all season. The defense has been the real story. You almost forget this team lost to the Colts in Week 2. The only loss since then came against the Saints on the road. This team can't lose to the reeling Giants. They have a chance to get a nice, early two-plus-game division lead with a win at MetLife.
It's been a soap opera for the Giants this season on and off the field. They have started a fire sale: cornerback Eli Apple and defensive lineman Damon "Snacks" Harrison were traded this week for draft picks. The picks they got back were not even appetizing enough to get Giants fans excited for the future. Speaking of future, this seems like the final season for Eli Manning, who was bad in Atlanta and has been bad all season. This Giants offense can't score in the red zone, and every week Odell Beckham Jr. generates a new newspaper headline. The Giants know this is it for Eli and that they are going to need to draft a QB. The way they are playing and operating, a team that had a chance to make the playoffs may end up having a top-three pick in the NFL Draft once again.
