If the Green Bay Packers elect to trade Aaron Rodgers, then the Jets apparently are ready to pounce.
In a development that ultimately doesn't come as a huge surprise, the Jets checked in with the Packers to see if they were willing to trade the future Hall of Fame Packers quarterback, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday. The report comes just a couple days after team owner Woody Johnson said a proven quarterback is a "missing piece" for the Jets.
Rodgers is scheduled to go on a darkness retreat this week during which he’ll ponder his next move. Pretty much everything seems to be on the table, from retirement to asking for a trade to returning to Green Bay.
For a while, there have been two obvious fits for Rodgers: the Jets and the Raiders. Both are teams with decent offensive weapons that need to find a quarterback this offseason. The Jets have a connection to Rodgers in new offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, while the Raiders have one of Rodgers' favorite targets, former Packer Davante Adams.
Unless the Raiders make a few other big swings this offseason, New York represents Rodgers’ best chance to win another Super Bowl in the near term of those two teams. The Jets have reigning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, and will get exciting young running back Breece Hall back next season from an ACL injury.
Regardless of which way Rodgers decides to go, it seems there could be some direction later this week. Packers players reportedly are “numb” to another offseason dominated by Rodgers headlines, so at this point any decision probably would be welcomed.
