Jimmy Garoppolo is staying with the San Francisco 49ers.

The veteran quarterback, who has been on the trade market for much of the offseason, has agreed to rework his contract and stay with the team as a backup to Trey Lance, according to multiple reports.

Garoppolo will have his base salary lowered to $6.5 million fully guaranteed plus a $500,000 roster bonus and playing time incentives that could push his salary up another $9 million, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal makes Garoppolo the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL.

Prior to the restructured deal, Garoppolo carried a cap number of $26.95 million.

Garoppolo, 30, was subject to trade rumors for much of the offseason despite leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game last year and the Super Bowl three seasons ago.

But the veteran quarterback had surgery on his shoulder and was not cleared to throw until the summer, when many teams were already settled at the quarterback position.

Many thought the Cleveland Browns, with ample cap space and a suspended Deshaun Watson, would be interested but they decided to stick with Jacoby Brissett as their backup.

While Garoppolo has had plenty of team success in San Francisco, his personal performance has been inconsistent and the team traded up to draft Trey Lance in last year’s NFL Draft.

Lance showed flashes of his potential as a rookie but was never able to take the job away from Garoppolo, although the team is fully committed to Lance this year.

If he should struggle or get hurt, the Niners have a more than capable backup as they look to contend for a Super Bowl yet again.
