The baseball feud we didn’t realize we needed took yet another turn on Saturday evening when Joc Pederson revealed the group text messages that were sent that had Pham angry enough to slap him on Friday night.
Pederson, following a 3-2 loss to the Reds, responded to comments Pham made prior to the game that Pederson said something about his former team (the Padres) in addition to the “sketchy s—t going on in fantasy.”
Pederson stood by his locker and confirmed what Pham, who was suspended three games, said was indeed true but also read verbatim the text message exchange in question to provide further context of what he specifically said.
“It’s true. There was a lot of money involved in it. I did said a GIF in the group chat making fun of the Padres,” he said. “In the group chat there’s about four or five Padres that I’m kinda close with a couple of them. It was supposed to be a friendly thing, just making fun of them playing bad…he did not like that and responded:
“’Joc, I don’t know you well enough to make any jokes like this.’ So then I wrote back, ‘It was meant to be all fun and games. No hard feelings. Sorry if you took it that way.’”
Pederson added that Pham eventually left the league about two weeks later and had not communicated with him until Pham approached him Friday night.
When asked what was the GIF, Pederson opened the group chat and showed his phone to the reporters displaying three powerlifters with the Giants, Dodgers and Padres logos over them with the lifter underneath the Padres logo collapsing.
“They were a really good team, so it was kind of making fun of how they were not playing well to make the playoffs,” Pederson added.
The Giants and Reds play again on Sunday so we will see if there are any more twists or turns to this fantasy football dilemma between two baseball players.
