Travis Kelce recounts getting body slammed by Derwin James: ‘He surprised the s— out of me'

Like all athletes, especially those in contact sports like football, Travis Kelce has taken his fair share of punishment over the years, though even he was surprised at being body-slammed by Chargers safety Derwin James, who practically broke the internet when he leveled the 6’5,” 250-pound tight end on national television last Thursday.

“I turned, I made a cut back and all of a sudden, he is on me like lightning,” said Kelce of his viral moment. “He surprised the s--- out of me. Lower man always wins in football.”

James arguably saved a touchdown on the play, stonewalling Kelce three yards short of the goal line as the Chiefs would ultimately settle for a field goal. Remarkably, Kelce stayed in the game, escaping his encounter with James relatively unscathed.

“When I felt him wrap his arms around my legs, I’m chuckling in my mind. I’m like, ‘This is not about to end well for me right now,’” said Kelce, recounting the experience to his brother and co-host, Eagles center Jason Kelce, on their weekly podcast, New Heights. “What goes up must come down. The body slam was funny, but what was even more comical is the fact that he asked me after the play, or after that drive, ‘Bro, you good?’”

Though his ego might be bruised, Kelce was a full participant at Wednesday’s practice ahead of Sunday’s game at Indianapolis, where the Chiefs have been installed as 5.5-point road favorites. Even without deep threat Tyreek Hill to stretch the field, the Chiefs haven’t missed a beat through two games, outscoring opponents 71-45 over that span.
