'Frustrated' Jacob deGrom placed on IL with right forearm tightness

The New York Mets will be without their ace and best pitcher in baseball for at least a little while.

Manager Luis Rojas told reporters prior to Sunday's game against the Pirates that Jacob deGrom was placed on the 10-day injured due to tightness in his right forearm.

DeGrom, who leads the majors with a microscopic 1.08 ERA, had been experiencing the issue prior to the All-Star Game — which the 33-year-old declined to attend and participate in without citing a specific reason.

The tightness continued during a side session on Friday and his throwing program was halted on Saturday. Rojas said an MRI revealed no structural damage but deGrom is not expected to begin throwing again until the forearm tightness dissipates.

"Yeah, I'm frustrated," deGrom told reporters on Sunday. "I don't know what else to say."

DeGrom had a brief stint on the IL earlier this year after missing two weeks with tightness in his side. He has also been removed from games due to soreness in his forearm and shoulder but had managed to avoid the IL with those issues.

The two-time Cy Young award winner appears to be poised to win his third should he stay healthy and continue to pitch like he has the first half of the season.

In addition to his 1.08 ERA, deGrom has struck out a league-leading 146 batters in 92 innings, or 45.1% of opposing hitters. Meanwhile, he's walked only 3.4% of batters faced and has a 0.55 WHIP — which is also an MLB-best.
