News broke earlier Saturday that Celtics star Jayson Tatum would miss 10-14 days due to COVID-19 protocols, and now Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe confirms what was feared: Tatum did indeed test positive for COVID-19.
Washburn adds that the Celtics canceled Saturday's practice and have shut down their practice facility at the Auerbach Center to all members of the organization.
Tatum is the second reported positive test on the Celtics in two days, as Robert Williams reportedly did so on Friday. Tristan Thompson and Grant Williams are also expected to miss at least a week after being deemed close contacts.
As of now, there have not been any reports of anyone being considered a close contact of Tatum. Tatum played in Friday night's win over the Wizards, but NBA research has determined that transmission of the virus during a game is unlikely since players are not in close contact for a long enough period of time.
As of Saturday afternoon, the Celtics are still scheduled to host the Heat at TD Garden on Sunday night. That could obviously change if anyone else tests positive before then.
Washburn reports that if Tatum's quarantine lasts the full 14 days, he would miss eight games and could be cleared to return for a Jan. 25 game against the Bulls.
