(670 The Score) After reaching an agreement to trade ace Yu Darvish to the Padres, the Cubs could soon deal away another key player.
The Cubs are "extensively shopping" catcher Willson Contreras on the trade market, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Tuesday. A trade of Contreras, a two-time All-Star, would continue the Cubs' efforts to clear salary after the exit of Darvish and the non-tendering of left fielder Kyle Schwarber earlier this offseason.
Contreras, 28, hit .243 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs and a .763 OPS in 57 games during the shortened season in 2020. He was an All-Star selection in 2018 and 2019.
The Cubs are also trading catcher Victor Caratini to the Padres as part of the Darvish deal, which features right-hander Zach Davies and four prospects coming back to Chicago in return. The team hasn't made that trade official.
