The Philadelphia Eagles were clearly the best team in the NFC last season as they finished 14-3 and made it all the way to the Super Bowl.
The San Francisco 49ers were the last in-conference team standing in their way, and the Niners are once again one of the Birds’ biggest threats this season.
A part of that is due to the 49ers signing defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, who spent the previous three seasons with the Eagles.
Audacy NFL Insider Ross Tucker explained why the 49ers signing Hargrave away from the Eagles was such a big deal on “The Best Football Show” this week.
“I think the Niners are a real wild card with the health of the quarterback position and the o-line, a little bit at right tackle. But I think the Javon Hargrave signing is huge,” Tucker said (6:55 in player above). “That was a liability for the Niners last year.”
The 49ers had the best defensive in football last year in terms of yards allowed per game (300.6) with the Eagles right behind them at 301.5. However, the Eagles led the league – by a wide margin – with 70 sacks. Hargrave had 11 of them.
“Hargrave, I still don’t know if Eagles fans appreciate enough how good he was. Hargrave is a bad, bad man,” Tucker continued. “For the Niners to take the Eagles’ best d-tackle and add him, that was a ‘We’re going to win the NFC championship’ move by the Niners. We’re going to take your best and put him on our team. So I think the Niners will be right there.”
The Eagles are the favorites to win the NFC at +350 while the 49ers are right there at +400.
It’s going to be an interesting season and a NFC Championship Game rematch would likely bring some fireworks after some of the comments that were made this offseason.
