Baker Mayfield’s days in Cleveland are numbered. The Browns’ 2018 first overall pick is seeking a trade out of Cleveland and it could come within the next few weeks.
92.3 The Fan's Browns beat reporter Daryl Ruiter discussed the Mayfield trade rumors with Andy Baskin on the latest episode of It’s Always Gameday in Cleveland.
“I believe that Baker Mayfield will be traded before training camp after the discipline for Deshaun Watson, assuming – key word assuming – that there is any, is announced,” Ruiter said (2:29 in player above).
Ruiter was adamant about his thoughts on Mayfield and the Browns last week, saying that the quarterback is “never playing for the Cleveland Browns again.” And his feelings haven’t changed.
“They gotta get him moved. We all know that. We’ve all been waiting for months and months and months for this to happen,” Ruiter said. “I think that if Deshaun Watson is disciplined, the Browns will move quickly to move Baker Mayfield if for any reason to help deflect a little from the Deshaun Watson situation, whatever that ends up being.”
Ruiter and Baskin discussed the possibility of Mayfield still being on the roster when training camp opens on July 27th.
“It would be nice if they go ahead and trade him. But yeah, if I am Baker Mayfield, and I’m still on the roster, I 100% show up to Berea and make things – not be, I want to say this correctly, not be a pain in the backside but just his presence will make things uncomfortable. If I’m Baker, I’m showing up to make it as uncomfortable as possible for Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry and everybody else in the organization that has basically shown him the door.”
However, Ruiter doesn’t think that it will come to that. With the Watson hearing wrapping up last week, there should be time for the league and the Browns to act.
“I do believe that Baker will be at training camp with somebody else,” Ruiter said. “That’s just my gut feeling right now. When training camp comes at the end of the month, Baker Mayfield will be on another team.”
