After an eventful championship weekend that saw two top-four teams lose, the College Football Playoff is finally set: No. 1 Georgia and No. 4 Ohio State will play each other in the Peach Bowl while No. 2 Michigan and No. 3 TCU will face one another in the Fiesta Bowl.
The winner of each game will then play in the national championship.
The final rankings did not come without some controversy, though.
Many thought that TCU would be knocked out after losing the Big 12 Championship to Kansas State on Saturday, which opened the door for Alabama possibly moving into the playoff picture.
Alabama was ranked sixth last weekend and did not play in its championship game. Neither did Ohio State, which moved from No. 5 to No. 4, replacing USC after the Trojans lost the Pac-12 Championship to Utah over the weekend.
Even Ohio State’s inclusion ruffled some feathers, as many saw their home blowout loss to Michigan as a disqualifier compared to the body of work Alabama put together, although the Buckeyes were ranked ahead of the Crimson Tide. Others felt that teams who played in a conference championship should not be subject to losing their spot to a team that did not play in one.
CFP chair Boo Corrigan explained that Ohio State got the nod due to its wins being more impressive than Alabama’s.
Nevertheless, there was strong reaction from many different perspectives on social media, with several others believing that the committee indeed got the teams right and “Good for TCU” was trending on Twitter.
Others, as noted above, felt strongly that the committee was wrong in its selection.
