Tim Tebow's return to the NFL has stalled, at least for the time being.

The former Broncos quarterback turned New York Mets minor leaguer was cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday, as the Jags and other teams continue whittling down their rosters ahead of the coming regular season.

The move comes only days after Tebow made his preseason debut at tight end for the Jags. His performance was widely panned by football observers and fans, who noted the 34-year-old former Florida Gators star had only one pass thrown his way and appeared to miss at least a couple blocking assignments in embarrassing fashion.

Tebow confirmed the news of his release on social media on Tuesday, and thanked the team for the opportunity.

"Thank you to the Jaguars organization and everyone who supported me in this journey," he said on Twitter.

Tebow signed in May on a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with Jacksonville, where he was reunited with his former college coach, Urban Meyer. Most critics dismissed the signing as a stunt, after Tebow's first NFL stint ended nine years ago due to apparent disinterest from any potential suitors.

Meyer was cagey about Tebow's prospects of making the final roster, mostly sidestepping questions while cautioning on a couple occasions that the process of paring down the roster often creates tough choices for coaches and executives.

In February, Tebow abruptly announced his retirement from professional baseball, after he spent several seasons in the Mets' farm system, where he made it all the way to Triple-A in 2019. Still, few saw him as a potential Major Leaguer after he hit a paltry .163/.240/.255 in the highest level of the minors.

If the Jags' signing of Tebow was in fact a stunt for publicity or sales, it seemed to work. Weeks after his signing, it was reported Tebow's No. 85 Jags jersey was the hottest seller at the NFL store.
