Tom Brady’s return to Foxboro wasn’t quite what we anticipated—Sunday’s combatants combined for all of 36 points, struggling to move the ball downfield with any consistency amid stormy conditions at Gillette Stadium. But even if it wasn’t the most pristine football, the game still lived up to its primetime billing, pitting arguably the greatest coach of all-time against his prized pupil in a chess match for the ages. Afterwards, Brady called the victory over New England "bittersweet," acknowledging the emotional toll it took playing his former team for the first time.

“Those are my guys, man,” the Bucs veteran expressed on his weekly podcast with Jim Gray of Sirius XM. “Those are the other warriors that I went to battle with for so long. I’ve had a lot of battles over the years with different teams, there’s a lot of mutual respect in pro sports, but I’m glad I’m through with the one [Sunday] night.”

Brady has now defeated every NFL franchise, joining Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Drew Brees (who he topped for the most passing yards in NFL history Sunday night) as one of just four quarterbacks to accomplish that feat. Of the 32 teams he’s beaten, one stands out as the most satisfying in Brady’s mind. Not surprisingly, it’s the team he’s had his most painful memories against.

“The team I would love to beat the most is the Giants,” said Brady, still bitter over losing to the G-Men in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. “I’ve always joked with Eli [Manning] and I think he likes that I bring it up all the time. So to bring it up again, I do not like losing to those guys, so when we beat them, I love that.”

While the two playoff encounters—including David Tyree’s infamous helmet catch to spoil the Patriots’ perfect 19-0 season—tend to drive the narrative, the Brady/Giants rivalry has produced plenty of compelling regular-season moments, from Randy Moss’ record-setting touchdown to Stephen Gostkowski’s game-winner in 2015.

Brady will get another shot at his archrival when the Giants travel to Tampa for Monday Night Football in Week 11.
