For the second time this season, Tua Tagovailoa is in the concussion protocol.

Tagovailoa told team doctors Monday he was experiencing concussion-like symptoms, one day after the Dolphins’ loss to the Green Bay Packers. It was later confirmed he indeed sustained a concussion, which comes after he missed two games earlier in the season due to a concussion in Week 4.

That particular injury resulted in an NFLPA investigation into the Dolphins, who just four days prior had allowed Tagovailoa to return to a game in which he sustained what appeared to be a head injury – although the team said was a back injury. The investigation found the protocols were used correctly, however they were insufficient, and updates were made.

At that point, some concussion experts were going as far as saying Tagovailoa should shut his season down.

It’s not clear now when Tagovailoa might return. His brother, University of Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa told The Associated Press that he gave his brother his opinion, and trusts he will make the correct decision.

“Everyone has their opinion,” Taulia Tagovailoa said Thursday. “My brother, I know he works hard. I know he has a family now. I want my brother to be safe, but at the same time I know that he has a love and a passion for football. I feel like he is going to make the right decision. The biggest thing is staying safe, so that is something he has to pray on. I know when it comes down to it, he will make the right decision.”

Whatever that decision ends up being, the younger Tagovailoa thinks his older brother will continue playing at some point.

“I just feel like he’s not going to stop playing football,” Taulia Tagovailoa said. “I feel like every opportunity he has, he is going to try to play. I don’t know, it’s just ‘go until the wheels fall off.’”

With Tagovailoa out, Teddy Bridgewater will take over for the Dolphins this week against the New England Patriots.
