Six years after the Chicago Cubs traded Gleyber Torres to the New York Yankees to acquire Aroldis Chapman for a World Series run, he nearly was dealt by another contender looking to bolster their roster before a playoff run.
Jon Heyman of The New York Post hears that the Yankees came "somewhat close" to sending Torres to the Miami Marlins for LHP Pablo López. Ultimately, Heyman hears that "the Yankees apparently pulled the plug."
While Torres has homered 18 times, driven in 50 runs and has a .732 OPS, he hasn't developed into the superstar that he once seemed destined to be, at least to this point. The 25-year-old has just a .298 on-base percentage in 2022.
With that said, the Marlins are so desperate for offense that they were apparently willing to tap into their organizational bounty of starting pitching in the form of López. The 26-year-old lefty has a 5.06 ERA in August, but has a 3.66 ERA, 3.72 FIP and 2.0 fWAR across 140 innings in 2022. López can't become a free agent until after the 2024 season, so he's understandably coveted around the sport.
The Yankees still have a comfortable 7 1/2 game lead in the American League East, but have gone just 8-14 in August.
