Winners of seven straight, the scorching-hot Yankees have been unbeatable of late, taking over first place in the American League Wild Card a month after many in the media were ready to pen their obituary. It’s been all hands on deck for the Bombers, who have received important contributions from Aaron Judge (.287/.385/.494 batting line with five homers and 16 RBI in the second half), Gerrit Cole (AL-leading 185 strikeouts) and rookie Luis Gil (0.00 ERA, 10.34 K/9 since his call-up), among other standouts.
Buoyed by their acquisitions of Joey Gallo, Anthony Rizzo and Andrew Heaney at the recent MLB trade deadline, the Yankees have been a team possessed, making history by becoming the first American League club to win six games against four different teams—the White Sox, Angels, Red Sox and Twins—in a five-day span.
Most of you are probably gaping at your computer (or smartphone, or if you prefer reading on the go) right now, wondering how such a chaotic feat would even be possible. Well here’s how—the Yankees wrapped up a three-game set with the White Sox (including their “Field of Dreams” showdown in Iowa) over the weekend, then traveled home to host the Angels for a makeup game Monday at Yankee Stadium. New York continued its winning ways by sweeping the reeling Red Sox, claiming both legs of Tuesday’s day/night doubleheader before dealing Boston another blow in Wednesday night’s series finale. Thursday was more of the same with the Yankees holding court in a 7-5 victory over Minnesota.
It seems that in their current impenetrable state, you could put just about anyone in front of the Bombers right now and they’d find a way to win. The Yankees are flying high now, but their hectic schedule could catch up to them at some point with no off days scheduled until mid-September. Luckily, the Yankees will have a chance to catch their breath when the Orioles—currently in the midst of a disastrous 15-game losing skid—come to town Labor Day weekend.
