MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA has officially brought rail service back to a part of western Delaware County.
The new Media/Wawa Line officially opened Sunday, and Wawa representatives greeted the first weekday commuters Monday with free iced teas, coffee and T-shirts at the Wawa Station, located on West Baltimore Pike.
Construction of the Elwyn to Wawa Service Restoration Project began in 2018.
The new line will provide service in Middletown Township and Chester Heights Borough. It’s been more than 35 years since SEPTA last served this community with passenger trains that gave them a direct line to Center City.
The Media/Wawa Line will have 19 trains to Center City daily and 21 to Wawa Station. The station is fully ADA accessible, includes a 600-space parking deck, and has connections to bus Routes 111 and 114.
Andrew, a resident in the area, who did not disclose his last name, has been watching crews build this station for three years.
“It’s long overdue,” he said. “It was just a matter of when it was going to happen, and I’m really impressed.”
“I’m really excited,” added Caitlyn, who also did not share her last name. “I live in Glen Mills so I’ve been watching it built up. It’s really nice.”
