Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The decision as to whether Virginians or lawmakers will be able to bring weapons to certain areas of the State Capitol will rest with the House Rules Committee. The House, on a party line vote, approved a rules package that gives the committee control of the decision. The Rules Committee has a Democratic majority, as does the House as a whole.
Republicans opposed the decision. Over the last two decades of Republican control, weapons were allowed on Capitol Grounds, but not in buildings controlled by the Governor. House Minority Leader Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) says the decision should be made by the entire House of Delegates.
Gun rights advocates have promised to show up in large numbers this year, as gun control is expected to be a major priority of the new Democratic majority.
