Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - As students prepare to head off to college, AAA says it’s important for parents to make sure vehicles and other property are covered by insurance and that students know how to protect against theft.

AAA spokesperson Morgan Dean says thieves often target college students since they bring with them many high-dollar items, such as smartphones, laptops, and other expensive devices. Parents should make sure students are aware of what's covered by insurance and what isn't.

"There are an awful lot of opportunities where students are out and about with their laptops and other things," says Dean. "There needs to be a checklist that includes making sure they're insuring and protecting any items that might be taking with them and protecting against identity theft."

While some valuable items, such as laptops, may be needed on campus, students may want to leave some expensive items -- such as jewelry -- at home. AAA also suggests creating a "dorm inventory" of items that will be brought to campus, including photos and receipts. In the event that you need to file a claim, an inventory will help make the process easier. Additionally, students should be reminded to always lock their dorm room door and never leave belongings unattended on campus.

Students who will be bringing a car to an out-of-state college should make sure they are still covered under their parents' insurance policy. To guard against vehicle theft, students should remember to never leave keys in a parked vehicle, park in a well-lit area, and keep valuables stowed out of sight.
