Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond Health District Director (and Virginia Vaccine Coordinator) Dr. Danny Avula says we may be facing a more intense flu season than normal this winter. Avula says flu could be stronger this year because immunity did not build up from last year, when there was little to no flu.
Flu cases were down in large numbers last year because of masks and social distancing, and virtual school. As a result, there is little built up immunity. He also says it is proving hampering efforts for this year's flu shot, because it is based, in part, on the previous year's flu.
Avula is still recommending people get a flu shot. He's unsure how demand will turn out, as he thinks its possible more people will be aware and interested, while at the same time, others may have vaccine fatigue.
