Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A bill that would raise the minimum wage in Virginia to $13.50/hour by 2025 and to $15/hour by 2026 was passed Jan. 18 by the House Labor and Commerce Committee.
“It’ll make a difference to that single mother, those people that are having a difficult time making ends meet,” Del. Jeion Ward (D-Hampton), the author of the bill, told the committee. “This will help them just a little bit.”
The vote comes after the Virginia General Assembly approved an increase in 2020 that brought the state’s minimum wage up to $12/hour in 2023.
“The reality is this, yesterday’s price is not today’s price,” Del. Mike Jones (D-Richmond) said. “Many of the people that I represent work two and three jobs just simply to make ends meet.”
