Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The General Assembly has begun the long process of the state budget debate, which is supposed to end at the end of session at the end of February. The House of Delegates and State Senate both passed their versions of the budget, starting the process that will eventually lead to negotiation of a final package.

In the House of Delegates, Democrats argued for additional funding for education over tax cuts favored by Republicans and Governor Glenn Youngkin. Republicans, who control the chamber, said they have been giving additional funds to education as well and both can be accomplished.

The General Assembly does not actually need to pass a budget bill this year as it is in the middle of a two year budget; however, traditionally, the Assembly has passed a bill making changes.
