Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Richmond City Council has now approved taking gaming tax revenue from a proposed casino to use to create a Childcare and Education Trust Fund. The fund is contingent on voters approving the referendum on the casino. Voting started last week.
Pro-casino forces brought out mothers around the fund vote to lobby for support, and to lobby for support for the casino. They, as well as Mayor Levar Stoney (D), say there is a lack of affordable childcare in the city. The fund will help reduce costs and increase capacity.
Opponents of the Casino say it exploits the poor. They also point out voters rejected the idea just two years ago. There have also been complaints about tying childcare funds to the Casino.
