Charlottesville, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - UPDATE: Work began around 7am this morning, and the Robert E. Lee statue was removed shortly before 9am.

ORIGINAL FROM FRIDAY: Charlottesville has announced it will be removing its statues of Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson tomorrow. Streets will be closed in the area, although there will be designated viewing spots for people to watch. The Supreme Court of Virginia cleared the way for removal earlier this year.

Charlottesville is moving the statues to a secure location on City property. The bases will remain for the time being. The city says they have received 10 offers for the monuments, and City Council will make the final determination.

In 2017, efforts to remove the statues lead to the Unite the Right Rally in August of that year. The rally ended in violence, with an activist killed, and two State Police trooper-pilots died when their helicopter crashed.
