Chesterfield County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Following months of pushback from the community, Dominion Energy has selected the Chesterfield Power Station site on Coxendale Road as the location for its proposed new natural gas plant, the Chesterfield Energy Reliability Center (CERC).
Dominion still needs approval from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia State Corporation Commission before construction can begin. More public meetings will also be held.
The chosen location was announced by Dominion Energy on Wednesday, Aug. 21.
Dominion officials say the Coxendale Road site, a retired coal plant, was chosen based on community feedback and the fact that a natural gas power station already exists there. Officials hope that the existing industrial footprint will curb the environmental impact locally.
Those in opposition of the plan include the community group Friends of Chesterfield. The group has expressed concern about the project’s impact and has filed a Request for Written Zoning Determination.
If approved, it would require Dominion to appear before a hearing in front of the county’s planning commission and Board of Supervisors.
