Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) -- The Senate Elections Committee has defeated a number of election-related bills pushed by Republicans this session. The State Senate has a Democratic majority.
Among the bills defeated were a bill that would have cut the number of days of absentee voting from 45 to 14. Proponents of the change argued that the timeline is required for all elections, not just general, so that for some localities, when they have multiple special elections, are in a near constant state of early voting. Opponents said it would limit access. Other bills rejected would have required absentee ballots be in on Election Day, and would have stopped the implementation of same-day registration.
All of these bills had passed the House of Delegates. The Senate had previously defeated Senate versions.
