Powhatan County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Just after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21, a large fire tore through a Powhatan County barn housing at least six horses.
Powhatan fire crews responded to Oakleigh Arabian Farm, located at 1507 Dorset Road, for a report of a fire. When they arrived on the scene, they saw three-quarters of a barn engulfed in flames.
Officials say five horses were able to be rescued from the barn and relocated to a neighbor’s field before crews arrived. Crews were then able to rescue one other horse once they arrived on scene. However, they believe three horses died in the fire.
By 8:45 p.m., the fire was marked under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
