Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The 2022 Virginia General Assembly session has begun with a change in control of the House of Delegates. As is customary, despite the close split between majority Republicans and minority Democrats, the chamber unanimously selected Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) as Speaker. Gilbert, who has two young sons, was joined by one of them for a portion of his introductory speech.
Gilbert promised to be a speaker for "all Virginians." He also promised Virginia children will get "the best education possible, in the best facilities possible, and that their parents are empowered with tools and choices to see their kids can live up to their fullest God-given potential." Education was a flashpoint during the election campaign.
Democrats made an attempt to make it easier for members to go virtual, but the majority Republicans left much of that to the discretion of the Speaker.
