Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Gov. Glenn Youngkin is calling for a ban on “sanctuary cities.”
In a press conference on Thursday, Dec. 12, Youngkin announced that he plans to introduce several budget amendments next week – one of which will be a proposal to withhold state funding from any law enforcement agencies that do not fully comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“This proposal requires local law enforcement and jail officials to fully comply with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers and provide notification to ICE 48 hours prior to the release of an illegal immigrant who has committed a crime,” Youngkin’s office said.
A “sanctuary city” is a locality that typically protects undocumented immigrants from deportation following a crime. Youngkin said he believes noncompliance with ICE has created a public safety issue.
Youngkin said this proposal would keep Virginia taxpayers from funding local authorities who will not deport undocumented immigrants who have committed violent crimes.
“When we have someone in custody and they have committed a crime and we have folks that don’t want to cooperate with the reality that they need to be dealt with and deported, we need [those agencies] to cooperate,” the governor said. “It keeps Virginia safe. It keeps America safe. This is common sense.”
