Hanover, Va. (Newradiowrva.com) - Hanover County's School Board held a special public hearing Tuesday night on its controversial transgender bathroom policy. The county was supposed to have a policy in place last year. It requires transgender students to apply to the board itself to get permission to use the bathroom conforming to their gender identity, and potentially to provide documentation including a criminal record.
A parent of a non-binary six year old asked the board if this meant her child would have to go to the Sheriff's Department to be finger-printed for a background check. Several in opposition to the policy considered it to be cruel. Supporters called it a policy for "all" children and some requested it only apply to high schools and just to bathrooms instead of bathrooms and locker rooms.
Hanover is expected to vote on the policy at the end of the month in another special meeting.
