Hanover County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Hanover County School Board is set to meet tonight to discuss whether to ban elementary and middle school students’ use of cellphones during the school day.

The recommended policy revisions would prohibit students from using any mobile device, earbuds, or headphones during the school day including class changes and lunches.

School leaders are also recommending a pilot program for use of “Yondr” phone storage pouches on the middle school level. Pouches are currently being used at some schools in Richmond and Hopewell.

“This is a mental health matter. I mean, discipline is part of it as well,” said school board member Greg Coleman of the Beaverdam Magisterial District in May’s board meeting.

The meeting on Tuesday, June 11 will begin at 7 p.m. following a closed session at 5 p.m. at the Hanover County Administration Building.
