Hanover, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Hanover's School Board will officially introduce its proposed transgender bathroom policy this evening, nearly a year after a policy was supposed to have been adopted. The policy, which is detailed, basically requires a student desiring to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity to ask permission of the school board.

LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Virginia opposes the policy, and says the Board is hostile to trans students. The group would prefer Hanover adopt the model policy, which would not require going to the Board. Board members are appointees of the elected Board of Supervisors in Hanover.

Board members have heard a lot of comment over a potential policy over the last year. Some parents have opposed allowing transgender students to use the bathroom corresponding to their gender identity, while others have advocated for a policy change.
