Henrico County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - New encrypted identification cards will be issued to all Henrico County Public School students on the first day of school to bolster safety.
Officials say the ID cards will have the student’s school logo and a barcode that can be scanned to bring up student information such as their student number, picture, schedule, and more.
“This card is responsible for getting students on the bus,” Lenny Pritchard, Chief of Operations for the school division, told our partners at 8News. “It’s for getting students to swipe [for] their breakfast and their lunch, their library books — any kind of technology such as their own 1-to-1 laptop and their charger. This could all be tracked through using their student I.D. [card.]”
Students will not have to use the card to move through classrooms and won’t be denied access to the same rooms and buildings they normally have access to. School officials say the cards will simply provide an additional layer of safety at Henrico County Public Schools.
If a student loses an ID card, it will be deactivated and replaced. The first day of school for Henrico students is Monday, Aug. 19.
