Henrico County, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A Henrico County judge has ordered former NICU nurse Erin Strotman to remain in jail over concern for her safety if she were to be released.
Judge Stuart Williams, Jr. said Strotman’s case has been the subject of national attention, and she and her family have received threats via social media and phone. The judge suggested Strotman would be safer in jail, given the circumstances.
Strotman is also being secluded from other inmates at Henrico’s jail because of concerns for her safety.
Strotman is accused of causing multiple fractures to a newborn in November of 2024 at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Hospital officials reported that additional babies were found with similar injuries, but charges in other cases have not been filed.
Videos posted to social media about the case have been viewed by inmates inside the jail, according to Strotman’s attorney. The videos claim Strotman targeted Black babies – however, Henrico police have said there is no evidence to support this claim at this time.
Strotman’s attorney argued in favor of bond, saying she would be safer in her parent’s gated community than in jail.
"I’m just told people have been watching videos in plain sight and other people have seen them and I think that is one of the reasons she is where she is," he said.
Judge Williams ultimately ordered her to remain in jail, stating that it’s his responsibility to protect both Strotman and the community.
Everhart said he planned to appeal the judge's decision. Strotman is due back in court May 12.
