Richmond, Va (NewsradioWRVA.com) - The Virginia Department of Forestry says that there is a high fire risk throughout much of the state for today and tomorrow. John Miller, the Director of Fire and Emergency Response at VDF says that winds that could gust up to 25 miles an hour coupled with the dry conditions we've seen the last few weeks is contributing to that elevated risk.
Miller says it means that there's increased risk for anything flammable to ignite quickly and also spread rapidly. As much as the potential is for fire with the current conditions, Miller says it looked worse earlier this week with higher sustained winds and gusts that were predicted. He says we got lucky that forecast didn't hold up.
Miller says it's odd to have this sort of fire risk since the fall fire season is over, but he says a good portion of the state is several inches in deficit for precipitation this year and that's what's making this threat more dangerous.
