Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Democrats in the House of Delegates are attempting a last-ditch maneuver to try and force a vote on a constitutional amendment on abortion rights. The amendment has passed the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, but has not been voted on by the House, controlled by Republicans.
Delegate Marcus Simon (D-Fairfax) has proposed a rule change that would force a vote. The rule change is not expected to get through, given GOP control, but is likely to become part of campaign ads this November.
Even if the rule change and the amendment were approved, it would still require a second vote next session before it would go in front of the voters. Democrats have rejected a number of abortion bans proposed in front of them in the Senate this session. House Speaker Todd Gilbert (R-Shenandoah) said prior to session that he didn't expect any movement during the issue.
