Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - Heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Debby is expected to cause the James River to crest over 10 feet by Saturday.

Officials say this could cause potentially dangerous conditions on the river, as it’s well above the flood stage. As Debby continues to move up the East Coast, safety authorities are urging residents to exercise caution around the river.

Rainwater as far as 200 miles west of Richmond will flow into the James River, causing water levels to rise and remain high even after the storm has passed. Residents are being advised against entering the river until conditions improve.

Water levels are expected to return to normal early next week. River levels can be tracked here.
