Jamestown, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The National Trust for Historic Preservation has added JamestowneIsland to its 2022 list of most endangered historic places. It comes as the site is about to celebrate its 415th anniversary next week.
Jamestown is endangered due to sea level rise and climate change. Preservation Virginia's Elizabeth Kostelney says the issue isn't river rise, but rather, water not draining from the Island. She says they often have flooding and closures during rain storms. She also says the swamp on the island is growing as well.
Kostelney says they have engineering plans to deal with the flooding issues, but they need to be done soon (within a five year period), and they need funding. She says being on the list will help give them a national profile to raise the money necessary. Jamestown is home to the first English settlement in North America, and the site of the first General Assembly in 1619.
