Fort Lee, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - The Department of Homeland Security says the final Afghan refugees have left Fort Lee in Prince George County. The Army base was the first to receive evacuees after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and the subsequent evacuation.
DHS says 25,000 Afghans have been resettled in communities around the country. Forty-five thousand remain at bases including Fort Pickett and Marine Corps Base Quantico here in Virginia.
Homeland Security says Afghans brought here were rigorously screened, and received a number of vaccinations, including for Covid-19. There was an initial measles scare with some of the early evacuees that lead to a pause in the resettlement effort.
